The Ninth Commandment

We are almost done with our study of the 10 commandments! I hope that all of us have learned more about theses laws given to us by God.

The 9th commandment states: "You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor." (Ex.20:16)

When we think of false witness, we think of lying. But slander, libel, lying under oath, all fall under false witness. I think gossip also fall under this commandment. When we gossip about others, we are slandering their name, reputation, etc. Since gossip tends to entail exaggeration, we need to be aware of what we repeat about others.

Since this commandment is about truth, we need to remember to be truthful when talking with God and others. If we love others, we should not be deceitful to them. We need to remember what the Word of God says about being truthful.(John 14:6, Num. 23:19, Ps. 15:1-3). Our lives and our words should always reflect the truth of God.

This week, look at how you speak to others and about others. Are you being honest with them? Are you tarnishing their reputation with your words? Are you remaining silent and thereby agreeing with what is being said? This are hard things to face about ourselves, but by doing so we can all see how impossible it is to live by these commandments.

We will discuss more on the purposes of these commandments in our wrap up in a few weeks.

I hope everyone has a good weekend and I will post again soon!
